Student Life Primary School

Structure

Thanks to the fact that our school is set in a wonderful natural context, our students spend a lot of time outdoors, during regular outdoor lessons and, of course, during break times..

Across more than five hectares of parkland, there are numerous outdoor play facilities: slides, large swings, rope structures, and even a climbing wall. All the equipment is made from the highest-quality natural materials.

We also have a well-stocked library. The books are available to all children, who regularly visit with their teachers and can easily borrow and return books using a dedicated app.

In our music room, every student has the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of instruments, including all types of the percussion and string variety and of course, the piano.

At Northlands, we use a wide range of tools, from books to computers, from interactive whiteboards to microscopes. Technology and nature form the foundation of our educational approach. We teach our children to make the best use of technology and show them how it can enhance their ability to learn and work, by promoting a balanced and mindful approach.

Trips

We believe that learning should not be limited to the school context alone, which is why, starting from the first term of the first year of pre-school, we organise trips that are real educational outings.

School trips are one of the best expressions of experiential teaching, which is based on action and concrete experimentation of concepts and offers students tools that allow them to learn while having fun through cognitive, emotional and sensorial experience.

From an educational point of view, school trips improve the level of socialization between students and between students and teachers, develop a sense of responsibility and autonomy and stimulate curiosity.

Three school trips are organised each year, one per term, and for primary school children, a trip with an overnight stay of two or more days is also planned, depending on the class.

Events

Throughout the year, Northlands International organises and promotes various initiatives and events, some of which have now become regular fixtures.

Winter Fair: held between the first and second week of December, our winter fair has a large market where there are stands of different products, crafts, services and associations as a food and drink area where you can taste delicious typical dishes from different parts of the world. At dusk, adults and children excitedly await the lighting of our unmissable bonfire, whose brightly blazing flames create a truly magical atmosphere. Many games with prizes are organised for all ages and everything is accompanied and enlivened by live music and circus performers.

Summer Fair: held in May along the same lines as the winter fair, with a market and an area dedicated to food and drinks; games with prizes are organised, including treasure hunts. Watermelon, lemonade, sangria, piña colada and ice cream are always available to help cool off, and thanks to the music of the DJ set, adults and children can dance until sunset and beyond.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) also organises various initiatives throughout the year such as its Bake Sale, Movie Night and more. For more information see the dedicated PTA section (PTA).

After School Clubs

Northlands International has an extensive after-school programme designed to complement the curriculum and encourage students to participate in a variety of cultural and sporting activities through which they can have fun and learn new skills. This option also allows families to plan their children’s extracurricular activities in a familiar location, avoiding travel and at a low cost.

KUNG FU

Practising martial arts increases trust and security, through overcoming small challenges, which the instructors use to help the little warriors to believe in themselves more and more. Training helps to focus energy, while the sequences of moves help to improve cognitive abilities. The exercises are designed to improve balance and coordination, and to strengthen the muscles and joints of children. Many parents speak of calmer and more cooperative children both at home and at school, as they release their pent up energies in this class. We offer children fun martial arts courses (which include jumps, somersaults and group games) through which we teach them discipline and respect for the rules. Tests and belt changes will be organised at different times of the year, to give children the deserved recognition of their commitment.

POTTERY

One question that often comes up when dealing with the theme of art is how to let children express their creativity without directing them too much. The first challenge is overcoming the feeling of getting their hands dirty in the various experiences of painting, collage, manipulation, and so on. Then they need to try and understand what can be done with the various materials at their disposal. This is particularly the case with clay, which is often completely new to them. Often, children left free to explore clay at their leisure quickly tire of it after the initial novelty has worn off. This is where the guidance comes in. With the right direction, they can discover that the pleasure of moulding and inventing allows them to express themselves and create, learning the best techniques to create their art.

GUITAR

The primary goal is to learn the guitar while having fun at the same time, to face challenges, with determination, enthusiasm and heart. The course is designed for students aged 5 and up. Lessons can be 30 minutes, 45 minutes or an hour, depending on the age or the individual child’s needs.

COOKING LAB

Let your imagination run wild through many recipes including puddings, rustic dishes, sauces, creams, and more. The aim of the workshop is to introduce children to the culinary art, and encourage them to taste a new variety of foods. At the same time, children will learn to familiarise themselves with the Spanish language, using common vocabulary. But most of all… it’s fun!

SEWING

The course offers a place for expression and interpretation using different materials and taking inspiration from festivals, seasons or chosen themes, and to develop manual and expressive skills. The activities are designed to introduce children to the world of creative handmade activities and some of its techniques (embroidery, sewing, fabric painting, scrapbooking), but also to the theory of colour and the use of colours through threads and fabrics. Children use different techniques of creative and modern embroidery and sewing through the use of traditional tools such as: needle, thread, frame, sewing machine, embroidery fabric, coloured fabric (mainly cotton). Simple paper patterns are used and the creation of a personal project is encouraged through the use of unusual and alternative techniques or materials. Group work is encouraged to foster a climate of collaboration.

DRAMA

The workshop focuses on the body as the basis of the creative process. Its activation is fundamental for the psychophysical development of the child. The workshop, according to each child’s ability to express and communicate, is a fundamental moment of self-discovery and growth, a place where the children get to know themselves and others through the characters.

In the improvisation and expressive games children can acknowledge parts of themselves and recognise feelings and emotions that can otherwise remain hidden away.

Each lesson begins with a 10-minute warm-up, followed by 25 minutes of football skills and ends with a 25-minute match.

TAG RUGBY

Rugby is a sport of movement and excitement, built on determination, a sense of responsibility, a spirit of belonging to the group, solidarity, mutual support, respect for the rules and for others, and pleasure in achieving a result with commitment and a spirit of collaboration. By making use of the whole body, the game of rugby helps improve coordination and reflexes. It teaches children how to fall safely and how to avoid obstacles, encouraging the improvement of physical fitness, developing an aptitude for discipline and a spirit of adventure. The course is held by qualified coaches from US Primavera Rugby which was founded in Rome in 1976 and has centres in Rome and Morlupo. By enrolling in the course, the children can take part in the same training sessions that the US Primavera Rugby offers at its own centres, but on the Northlands site.

Northlands International
House System

House System

Northlands International is divided into three Houses: Phoenix, Gryphon, and Pegasus. The “House” system refers to a well-established tradition from the British education system. Belonging to a house, in addition to being part of a class group, allows children to develop a broader sense of belonging and to socialise with peers of different ages. This organisation also promotes a sense of responsibility among older students toward younger ones, learning through imitation, the development of social responsibility, mutual respect, and the understanding that others are essential to achieving shared goals.

At the beginning of each school year, during the first Assembly, each new student is informed of the house to which they have been assigned. All members of a house are equally important, and are expected to collaborate and support one another. This system will accompany students from primary school throughout their entire academic journey. Pupils earn points through various events and competitions, as well as through their individual work and behaviour, all in an effort to win the annual House Cup, which is awarded to the house with the highest total score at the end of the school year.

During monthly Assemblies, all the Juniors gather together for the awarding of the “Pupil of the Month” and the winning House. The best student work is showcased, and exemplary behaviour is recognised. These gatherings also give children the opportunity to engage in debates, raise concerns, and put forward proposals.

Midterm

The school year runs from September to the end of June, divided into terms:

  • Autumn Term from September to December
  • Spring Term from January to March
  • Summer Term from April to June

Midterm, held in the middle of the first two terms (approximately at the end of October and the end of February), are weeks in which the school remains open but normal curriculum activities are suspended.

The midterms are more than a time of pause: they are days that children perceive as light and happy but which mainly have the objective of making them recover their energy, and prepare themselves to conclude the term with newfound energy and enthusiasm.

The midterms at Northlands International are dedicated to the theme “Cultures and Traditions” when these special weeks are dedicated to one or more countries. All the activities are designed and structured in order to discover through books, food and games, the habits and customs of different countries thus giving us the opportunity to focus on the value of diversity and to “travel” to discover difference, multiculturalism and comparison.

The mid-term point in the summer term coincides with the Easter holiday, and the school is closed.
