Frequently asked questions

northlands international

How does parental education work?

Legally speaking, Northlands International is an association rather than a state-approved institution; therefore, in order to fulfil their educational obligation, the families of our students must:

submit annually the declaration form for parental education at the relevant territorial institute with which they declare that they provide for the education of their child (directly or privately)

acknowledge that students must annually take the proficiency exam for promotion to the next class, as external candidates, at a state school or private school recognised by the ministry of education, in order to verify that they have fulfilled their compulsory education requirements.

Parental teaching is provided for by law, which states that compulsory schooling is fulfilled by attending schools […] or by the child’s parents who intend to provide privately or directly for the education of the interested child […] and to communicate this year by year to the competent authority.

What do the end of year exams consist of?

The proficiency exams are carried out by the Gesù Maria Institute of Rome.

Primary school exams:
The proficiency exams are held at school, with both the written and oral exams taking place in a single day.

The written exams are for Italian and mathematics. For the oral exam, each student presents an interdisciplinary piece of work on the subjects of geography, science and history.

Middle school exams:
The exams are held at the Gesù Maria Institute over three days divided as follows:

1st day Italian written exam
2nd day maths written exam
3rd day English written exam and oral exam

For the oral exams, each student brings an interdisciplinary presentation for the subjects of history, geography, science, and art history.

High School Exams

The exams are taken at the Istituto Paritario G. Visconti, over three days divided as follows:

1st day Italiano written exam
2nd day course subject written exams
3rd day English written exam and oral exam

During the oral exams, each student gives an interdisciplinary research presentation on the subjects being examined, depending on the chosen course.

The Gesù Maria Institute or the G. Visconti Private Institute issues each student a certificate of proficiency for the next class annually.

Can a student from an Italian school be enrolled at Northlands International?

Northlands International is not a selective school; however in the interests of both the individual pupil and the classes as a whole, applications for placement in primary and secondary classes may require a check of the child’s level of English. As a bilingual school, the majority of the curriculum is taught in English, making it necessary for a child to have an adequate level of written and spoken English to settle in and to keep up with their classmates.

Can a student attending Northlands International be placed in the Italian school?

Yes. The certificate of proficiency for the next class issued each year following the exam is valid for transfer to or enrolment in any state or private school.

What is included in the fees?

Meals, snacks, exercise books, diaries, and afternoon workshops are included.

Enrolment fees, end-of-year exam fees, uniforms, text books, stationery, extracurricular activities (after 4 p.m.) and field trips are not included.
